Northwestern University researchers have identified a vast “sixth ocean” about 700 km beneath Earth’s surface, hidden within mantle rock. Using 2,000 seismographs to study 500 earthquakes, scientists found seismic waves slowed as if absorbed by water. Estimated to hold three times the volume of all surface oceans combined, this hidden reservoir reshapes our understanding of Earth’s water cycle.
